The Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Science at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Animal and Veterinary Science starting in the Fall of 2024.
The teaching load is 12 credits per semester (3-4 courses per semester), which may include curriculum development based on the applicant’s area of interest and expertise.
Basic Function
The duties of the Animal Science Assistant Teaching Professor will include teaching undergraduate courses in animal science, including but not limited to the following courses: Animal Nutrition (AVS 412), Feeds and Feeding (with laboratory; AVS 212, Introduction to Animal Science (AVS 101), and Animal Diseases (AVS 332). Typical enrollment for these courses is 50-100 students.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
In addition to the above teaching duties, the Assistant Teaching Professor will assist in course management and the development of pedagogies to enhance student learning and retention. This may include curriculum development, experiential learning opportunities and supervision of undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants. Additional responsibilities include: advise/mentor undergraduate students, assist with supervision of student clubs and organizations, and participate in other activities (e.g. student recruitment) supportive of the Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Science and the College of the Environment and Life Sciences.
Required Qualifications
- Earned Master of Science degree in Animal Science or closely related area by December 2023.
- Demonstrated teaching experience and responsibilities at the college or university level as an instructor, lecturer, or teaching assistant in animal science.
- Demonstrated content expertise in livestock nutrition.
- Demonstrated skills in interactive teaching including hands-on demonstrations and active learning.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of students and faculty.
- Demonstrated ability to function independently and collaboratively in a complex academic environment
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. on a long-term basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in Animal Science or a closely related field or title of Doctor in Veterinary Medicine by July 1, 2024
- Minimum two years of experience with independent teaching of one or more undergraduate course(s) in animal science at a college or university.
- Demonstrated content expertise and experience in teaching and/or research in ruminant nutrition.
- Demonstrated expertise in animal health and diseases as demonstrated by teaching or research experience.
- Demonstrated experience using on-line teaching tools and learning management systems at the college level.
- Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and learning outcomes assessment.
